چکیده

Investigators of copulatory behaviour in lower mammals usually describe the female's sexual condition as `receptive' or 'nonreceptive' . Differing degrees of receptivity have of course been recognized and studied, but they have been treated as variations in the female's overall level of sexual responsiveness which affect her reactions to all males. Consistent differences in a particular female's readiness to mate with different masculine partners have not been reported for any infraprimate species . The purpose of the present report is to describe such differences in one group of dogs .

Coital behavior in dogs. IV. Effects of progesterone in the bitch.

For a number of years it has been the practice in our laboratory to prepare female dogs for mating tests with males by injecting them with estradiol benzoate.1 The standard treatment has consisted of giving two intramuscular injections spaced 48 hours apart. Effects of diets supplemented by fish oil on sex ratio of pups in bitch

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of fish oil supplementation prior to mating on secondary sex ratio of pups (the proportion of males at birth) in bitches. Sixty five bitches (German Shepherd, n = 35; Husky, n = 30) were enrolled in the study. Bitches (140-150 days post-estrus) were given 2% per dry matter intake palm oil and fish oil in the control (n = 33) and treatment (...

Coital behavior in dogs: effect of estrogen on mounting by females.

Female dogs mounted other females more frequently when the 2nd bitch was in estrus, but the hormonal state of the mounting individual had little influence upon mount frequency; estrogen rendered a female more pro vocative or stimulating and more cooperative or receptive to mounting by another dog. During heterosexual tests estrous females tended to mount males selectively, responding readily t...

Litter size at birth in purebred dogs--a retrospective study of 224 breeds.

Despite the long history of purebred dogs and the large number of existing breeds, few studies of canine litter size based upon a large number of breeds exist. Previous studies are either old or include only one or a few selected breeds. The aim of this large-scale retrospective study was to estimate the mean litter size in a large population of purebred dogs and to describe some factors that m...

A sociobiological origin of pregnancy failure in domestic dogs

Among domestic dog breeders it is common practice to transfer a domestic dog bitch out of her home environment for mating, bringing her back after the mating. If the home environment contains a male, who is not the father of the foetuses, there is a potential risk of future infanticide. We collected 621 records on mating of 249 healthy bitches of 11 breed-types. The highest proportion of succes...
